At the outbreak of WWII in 1939, New Zealand troops formed an Expeditionary Force of one division, which became known as the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force (the 1st having been that of WWI). The 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force rugby team, popularly called the 'Kiwis', was made up of players chosen from soldiers who had been in active service in North Africa, Egypt and Europe.
The 'Kiwis' toured the UK, Ireland, France and Germany in 1945-46 and played 33 games, of which they won 29, lost two and drew two, beating the English, French and Welsh international sides, and are credited with reviving international rugby after the war.
