About this objectThe Gallaher Shield is awarded to the championship winning team of the Auckland Rugby Union. It is played for annually by the Premier Mens teams. The current format includes round robin play, semi final and a final. The Ponsonby Rugby Club set a record by winning the shield 8 years in a row (2004 - 2011). The club has won it more times than any other Auckland club. The shield is named after Dave Gallaher, Captain of the 1905 All Blacks. Gallaher played for the Auckland province and Ponsonby was his rugby club. The shield was first played for in 1922. The shield is currently on loan to the Grammar Carlton Club.
