Name/TitleHorse Shoe, 1880-1920
About this objectDuring work to improve the drainage of the pitch at Twickenham Rugby Stadium, this horse shoe was uncovered under the soil. Dated to the early part of the twentieth century, it is difficult to say precisely how the horse shoe got there, although a number of possibilities exist. It could have come from one of the horses who pulled the heavy lawn mowers used by the Twickenham grounds men or it could be from one of the horses that were allowed to graze on the pitch during the First World War when rugby matches were suspended.

Is it possible that an unknown player carried the 'orseshoe onto the field and used it to biff another player during a harsh game?
