About this objectMedal from the 1888 Anglo-Australian tour. Awarded to A P Penketh who played on this, the first rugby tour from the British Isles. The medal was presented to him in 1889 by Douglas Football Club in recognition of his ability as a rugby player. The invitation team that would eventually become the British and Irish Lions first ventured forth in 1888. More than a month at sea, aboard the SS Kaikoura, was followed by 35 games against sides in New Zealand and Australia. The touring side racking up 27 wins, 6 draws and 2 defeats.
Amongst their number was Manxman Alfred Penketh. Penketh, captain of Douglas, featured 19 times. The following year Douglas Football Club presented Penketh with this medal, in recognition of his accomplishments.
The St George and Union flag motif, and ‘Anglo-Australian Team’ script, also featured on the caps issued to players on the tour.
