About this objectThis is the first time that the red rose was used on a rugby jersey. The jersey was worn by J. H. Clayton in the first ever rugby international.Scotland v England, 27/03/1871. Clayton was one of 10 Old Rugbians (ex Rugby School pupils) in the first English international side.He was also one of 13 England players in that first international game who would never represent their country again. The white jersey was copied from Rugby School and the red rose has been used ever since. There is no conclusive evidence to prove why the red rose was originally chosen to be the emblem. This rose has faded.
