Name/TitleJersey, New Zealand Originals Tour 1905
About this objectThis jersey was worn by William Glenn, a member of the 1905 New Zealand ‘Originals’ Touring team. Glenn gave the jersey to Yorkshire player John Green following the Yorkshire v New Zealand match. Glenn was a ‘breather’ meaning he was an unselected player for this game. Although this touring side are known as the ‘Originals’ a New Zealand team had toured Britain in 1888. However, the 1888 team had been privately promoted and the 1905 team was the first to be officially organised by the NZRFU. The New Zealand side had been wearing black jerseys since 1893 and were referred to as ‘the blacks’ on many occasions, but it was the 1905 team that were the first to be nicknamed the ‘All Blacks’. A reference to the ‘All Blacks’ appeared in the Express and Echo newspaper following the first game, against Devon. The nickname stuck as the popularity of the side increased, and is still used today.
