Name/TitleWalking Stick - Charles Monro
About this objectThe museum holds treasured keepsakes, diaries and photographs from the man credited with giving New Zealand the game of rugby - Palmerston North identity Charles Monro. His mānuka walking stick immortalises Charles’ steely determination to see his favourite game take root in his native country. In 1870 he walked a 30km round trip between Wellington and Petone in a day – searching for the perfect paddock for the country’s first inter-district clash between his hometown Nelson and Wellington. He not only selected and coached the Wellington novice team, but also played for Nelson and refereed the game!
