About this objectA poignant memento of rugby at war, this jersey was proudly worn by members of the famed second New Zealand Expeditionary Force rugby team called the 'Kiwis'. During WWII, New Zealand soldiers were commonly called 'Kiwis' - a name that stuck and is now used to describe all New Zealanders. This jersey was worn by Kiwi vice-captain (and Manawat? lad) Jack Finlay, during the team's immediate post-war tour of the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Germany. War-weary New Zealand followed the team's entertaining brand of rugby via radio commentary courtesy of the sports broadcaster who accompanied the team - Winston McCarthy. McCarthy's iconic commentaries were the first live rugby broadcasts to New Zealand from the United Kingdom.
