Name/TitlePhotograph [Pioneer Footballers, Owaka]
About this objectPhotograph; a black and white photograph of a football team, thought to be the pioneer footballers of Owaka.
A note on the reverse states that the team played on a part of McIntyre's flat, opposite the town skip, before the recreation grounds was developed. Only one team wore striped jerseys, to distinguish them from the others in work clothes.
The team played for possession of a polished totara knot with silver shields attached around the side. Every year the winning team had their names engraved on a shield, attached to the knot and it was their property for the ensuing year. Owaka won the trophy every year except the last when the Milton team won.
The original photograph has been digitised. A digital image and copy print are available for research access.
